My Favorite Childhood Reads

As I am still trying to grasp just how blogging works, I figured I would write a post I know everyone can relate to. Growing up, I was always the book worm in my family. There were many nights when my mom would catch me reading in the middle of the night with a head lamp on to read…..yup, you read that right, a HEAD LIGHT. Eleven year old Kellie was much like twenty-one year old Kellie, who would rather sacrifice hours of sleep to read just One. More. Chapter.

I have vivid memories of going to the library weekly with my mom over summers, tote bag in tow, and leaving with a minimum of ten books. I had my library card number memorized, and devoured books daily. What this is all leading up to I guess is that along the way, many of these books became some of my absolute favorites, so here is the ones that came out on top:

1. Harry Potter

Alright, so I know everyone puts this as their number one childhood book series, but lets be real here……These books were the building blocks of my childhood. Some of my absolute favorite memories involve this series, and I feel like that is a whole blog post in itself, but lets just say I still have an EXACT replica of Bellatrix Lestrange’s wand displayed in my room that I made out of clay circa summer 2010 with my brother at 3am. One of my favorite places to be is Harry Potter World at Universal, which I am lucky enough to have an Annual Pass to. 2. Percy Jackson and the Olympians

I read this series in middle school and was obsessed!! Percy, Annabeth, and Grover always had the craziest adventures, and I was surprised with every book. These books got made into movies, and the first one in my opinion was really good, but that second one…….we won’t get into that, lol.

3.   Sarah Dessen books

I remember in middle/high school I devoured these books. Sarah Dessen is such an amazing author, who isn’t afraid of writing about tough topics. Some of her books showed me that life is not easy, and that was kind of hard to learn at a young age. I don’t think I can really pin-point a favorite book of hers because it’s been so long that I’ve read them, but they are a great read and I encourage every coming of age young adult to read them.

4. The Hunger Games

This trilogy is one of my all time favorites. My Sophomore year of High School, I broke my ankle and during that first weekend when I was on crutches, I read all of these books. Besides Harry Potter, this series is my favorite book to movie adaption, and I literally just had a movie marathon of these over the weekend. I think these books really opened up dystopian young adult novels, and got me into the genre.

5. Twilight

Thought you could make it through one of these posts without Twilight in there? Think again. I discovered this series in seventh grade because I was constantly told I need to read this series over and over and over again. Was it because it was SO good? No. Was it because of the vampire-werewolf aspect? Nope. Was it because of the beautiful covers? Try again. Although these are very valid points of this series, it was because my last name………………is Cullen. Yup, you read that right. To this day people still chuckle or don’t believe me when I tell them what my last name is. I once had a teacher in High School have me pull out my drivers license because they did not believe it was truly my name. Even though I have this comical connection to the book, I really did love this series and the characters (Team Jacob 4 lyfe). I remember going to the bookstore at midnight for Breaking Dawns release, and reading for almost 24 hours straight to finish it.
